Fall & Winter Maintenance Reminders

Perform the following maintenance items to keep your home well-maintained and in compliance with your Association. These tips may also help prevent expensive emergency repairs or accidents.

  • Clean all dead plants out of flower beds and trim shrubs or plants that need it.

  • Check windows and doors and replace rubber gaskets or seal air leaks as needed.

  • Repainting or staining front doors, decks, fences and window and door trim keeps your home looking fresh and preserves these items.

  • Check your air filters! A dusty air filter reduces your heat's performance and puts unnecessary strain on the system, which increases energy usage and repair bills.

  • Close outside faucets, disconnect outdoor hoses and have irrigation systems winterized, if applicable. Make sure outdoor faucets are insulated from the cold to prevent breakage. Styrofoam faucet covers are less than $10.

  • Test Your Alarms. This is easy but can save your life. Push the test button on your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and listen for the alarm. Don’t hear anything? Put in new batteries and repeat the test again.

  • Check the expiration date on your fire extinguishers, and replace them if they are expired.

  • Inspect your attic and basement, if applicable. These areas will show signs of water damage or potential issues before you see them in your actual living spaces.
